Bulbs for GTS

Green Thumb Sunday

Gardeners, Plant and Nature lovers can join in every Sunday; visit As the Garden Grows for more information.

My pictures for this week are my almost-row of hyacinths. (The picture is from the side, so it looks better.) And a flower I found underneath the Rose of Sharon. Mom planted some bulbs there, I think they were anemone of some sort - I'll have to search for a label.

Happy GTS!

Garden Bloggers Bloom Day

Today was a slightly warmer day than we've been having, and perfect for taking pictures.
The crocuses are pretty much done, and the hyacinths are getting ready for their turn to show off.
The Puschkinia libanotica that I planted around the Japanese Maple have bloomed. I thought there were some in my bulb garden, but they haven't made an appearance yet.

Moving inside, my African Violet is nearly twice as big as it was the last time it bloomed and it has 5 flower stalks this time.
Also, Mom's Christmas cactus has another bud on it.

Spring Chores

Tuesday was a nice, warm, sunny, busy day. I spent the morning re-planning the vegetable garden. Baker Creek Seeds sent me two free packets of seeds, and I had to work them into the garden plan. After lunch, I planted my snap peas - I bought an heirloom variety from Lowes. I covered them with chicken wire to keep the birds and chippies from eating the seed, and covered the wire with heavy plastic to help warm the soil faster.
While I was out looking around the veggie garden, I noticed that the chippie had dug a hole right outside the fence again. I filled it in with dirt, and placed a large rock over it.

While inspecting my bulb garden, I noticed that there was a lot of gravel in it. We think that when the gravel for the driveway was put down, the leftovers got dumped in the side yard. I spend a few afternoons every year picking out the bits of gravel.
After picking gravel out of the garden, I trimmed the Russian Sage plants. The one on the side of the house looked really healthy, so I cut it down pretty low. I left the one that we moved a bit taller; partly because of the wind, and also because my Mom lopped off the top of it after it was moved.

After coming inside, I promptly came down with a cold. Due to my cold and the weather, I haven't been able to get back out to see how things are growing. From inside, it looks like my garlic is growing an inch every day.

Most of my seedlings are growing well, and I should have the last flat started in the next few days.

Orchid Show

Last Sunday I went to the Genesee Valley Orchid Society's annual Orchid Show. The orchids were lovely, and smelled just as pretty as they looked. I had planned to buy one this year, but due the state of my finances, I decided to wait a while.
Since I took so many pictures, I'm only posting two here. The rest are on MyPhotoAlbum, and can be viewed by clicking here. Since I have not yet formed the habit of writing down what my pictures are of, there are no descriptions.

Arte Y Pico Award

My Mom has awarded me the Arte Y Pico award. Thanks Mom!

There are 5 rules attached to this and they are:

1) You have to pick 5 blogs that you consider deserve this award for their creativity, design, interesting material, and also contributes to the blogging community, no matter what language.

2) Each award has to have the name of the author and also a link to his or her blog to be visited by everyone.
3) Each award winner has to show the award and put the name and link to the blog that has given her or him the award itself.

4) Award-winner and the one who has given the prize have to show the link of "Arte y Pico" blog , so everyone will know the origin of this award. http://arteypico.blogspot.com/
5) To show these rules.

I am passing the award to:

~ My Sister, Grace. She takes the most amazing photos, and is incredibly creative in what and how she picks items to photograph.
~ Carol at May Dreams Gardens. Carol is very creative with her post topics, and writes informative, humorous, and creative posts.
~ Sarah at Romantic History. Sarah seems to be creative with everything. She makes up her own patterns, paints cute faces on dolls, and isn't afraid to experiment on her projects.
~ The Crafty Gardener, whose creativity is not limited to gardening.
~ Diane, the Lace-Lovin' Librarian. Her tatting is absolutely beautiful, and even her practice designs are gorgeous.

Thanks again, Mom, and thank you for teaching me how to be creative.

The Plant Invasion Continues...

Today was a day of failed Good Intentions. I meant to spend today writing blog posts, but spent most of the day outside, instead.

Yesterday I transplanted most of my peppers, and the Black Susan Vines. I also re-seeded a few plants that had died and/or hadn't sprouted. The tomatoes have moved onto my windowsill, relocating my caterpillar draft dodger to the bookcase, and three flats now occupy the table. Tomorrow I have to find space for one more flat so I can plant more seeds.
